Class Title: The Not-Sweet Woman
Instructor: Janelle Hardy
Class Term: January 28-March 4, 2019
We are not accepting any more enrollments for Janelle's class; the class has started.
Staying sweet? No. Not for me. But savory? With some salt, a dash of bitters, and some slightly sour flavors? Yes. For women who are wholly human, wholly here, and full of flavor, this is a course in which we write the full range of our lives — stories that reflect all of the ways in which we are everything BUT supersweet, using the five flavors as inspiration.
This is a 5 week course including weekly videocalls to discuss the weekly theme and write together. You'll receive a weekly e-mail with the writing lesson (including a story, a description of the theme, and prompts to stir your spirit into creative self-expression.) You'll e-mail the writing to me for feedback.
At the end of this class, students will be able to use their senses and body as a source of writing inspiration, they'll have 5 completed short stories about themselves.
Best of all, students will have a greater sense of the vibrancy of themselves as women, and how to fully express that through writing.
Instruction/Communication Method: Weekly e-mails including the writing lessons, weekly videocalls to connect, and a yahoo group site (or facebook secret group, if all the participants use facebook, as I find that easier.)
Every week I'll send a message on Monday morning with the weekly lesson.
Each week the lesson will include a story, information about the flavor being used for inspiration, and writing prompts.
- Unit 1: More salty thank sweet.
- Unit 2: More sour than sweet.
- Unit 3: More bitter than sweet.
- Unit 4: More savory than sweet.
- Unit 5: Naturally sweet but not sugary.
Student Skills, Equipment, and Time Required

Time Commitment: approx 2 hour per week.
