Class Title: Exploring the World of Writing Creative Nonfiction with the Help of 'Tell It Slant' by Miller and Paola
Instructor: Len Leatherwood
Class Term: May 29-July 17, 2017
We are not accepting any more enrollments for Len's class; the class has started.

Synopsis

Creative nonfiction is what author Lee Gutkind aptly describes as, "True stories, well told." It is a type of writing that takes a true event and tells the story in a dramatic way through the use of literary techniques such as setting, characterization, dialogue, plot, theme, tone, etc. The word "creative" doesn't mean facts are altered; it means instead you use creative devices to bring the story to life. And the story can be an essay, a memoir piece, a poem, a research piece or even an entire book that tells the truth with a particular creative slant. This course will use the book Tell It Slant by authors Brenda Miller and Suzanne Paola to explore the genre of creative nonfiction.

Class Description

Creative nonfiction is an important genre of writing that offers a plethora of opportunities for writers who want to tell true stories without sounding as if they are producing newspaper reports. Through the use of the book, Tell It Slant, the course will focus on three main areas of writing. We will spend three weeks on Unearthing Your Material; two weeks on The Many Forms of Creative Nonfiction and two weeks on Honing Your Craft. We will read sample stories and also produce stories from numerous writing prompts offered in the book

At the end of this class, students will have:

  1. Learned the basic principles of creative nonfiction writing.
  2. Understood more clearly the basic requirements for producing various types of creative nonfiction.
  3. Created several first-draft creative nonfiction pieces (and perhaps some completed ones).
  4. Produced a list of creative nonfiction ideas for future writing.
