Begin a journey to transform your emotional well-being through the art of reading, contemplating, and understanding traditional haiku and by learning about the Way of Haiku through mindfulness practices.
Have you ever wondered how haiku originated and exactly what it is? Haiku is an old Japanese poetic form derived from a much older linked-verse form and is now practiced all over the world. Are you curious about this poetry and how you can use it for yourself? In the first part of this two-part course, you'll explore the Way of Haiku through the study of Japanese haiku masters and how a practice of mindfulness and contemplating haiku can enhance your emotional well-being.
At the end of this class, students will be able to know what traditional haiku is and use the powers of thinking, observation, and reflecting to make meaning in haiku. They will have learned about the five great haiku masters and how practicing mindfulness awakens the mind, body, and spirit to what is truly present in each moment.
Instruction/Communication Method: Each week readings, links, and exercises will be emailed to students and/or posted on Yahoo group.
Each week will consist of:
- Unit 1: The World of Traditional Haiku: "What Haiku Is, Dispelling Misperceptions, Elements of Haiku, How to Read Haiku, Recreating the Haiku Moment, What is Mindfulness, Beginner's Mind, Reflective Writing Exercises, Sharing and Discussions
- Unit 2: Being in the Moment: "First Haiku Master, Being Present, Exploring Awareness and Inter-being, the Way of Haiku, Readings, Reflective Writing Exercises, Sharing and Discussions
- Unit 3: The Senses: "Second Haiku Master, Tuning the Senses, Deep Listening, Mindful Writing, Readings, Reflective Writing Exercises, Sharing and Discussions
- Unit 4: Oneness with Nature: "The Great Female Haiku Master, Awakening, Unity of Nature with Humanity, Experiencing Love, Readings, Reflective Writing Exercises, Sharing and Discussions
- Unit 5: Compassion: "Third Haiku Master, Practicing Mindfulness and Self-Compassion, Readings, Reflective Writing Exercises, Sharing and Discussions
- Unit 6: Sketch of Life: "Fourth Haiku Master, Seeing into the Nature of Things, The Art of Suffering, Reflective Writing Exercises, Sharing and Discussions

Student Skills, Equipment, and Time Required
All reading and writing levels are welcome. Basic Internet and computer skills required with ability to navigate Yahoo group, open files/attachments, and/or send e-mails.
Time Commitment: Students should plan on reading at least one haiku daily — studying it and reflectively writing about it. Plan on spending 10-30 minutes daily on mindfulness practices and a minimum of 20-30 minutes each day on the reflective writing exercises. Another 60 minutes or longer is needed each week (depending on class size) for reading, sharing, and discussions.

Cyndi Lloyd is passionate about reading and writing, especially haiku which has brought her much emotional healing. She is a June 2013 Writing It Real contest winner for her short story. She is runner-up in The Haiku Calendar Competition 2018 and recipient of an honorable mention for the first Haiku Moment Award, Autumn Moon Haiku Journal, Vol.1:2. Her Aunt Karen was selected as one of the best haibun of 2017 in old song: The Red Moon Anthology of English-Language Haiku. Her Japanese-form poems appear in various worldwide publications, including The Bark, cattails, Chrysanthemum, frogpond, The Heron's Nest, Modern Haiku, Presence, Shamrock, Stardust Haiku, and tinywords. Her poems also appear in the following anthologies: Haiku Society of America's Member Anthologies, Haiku North America's 2017 Anthology, Every Chicken, Cow, Fish and Frog: Animal Rights Haiku, Write Like Issa: a haiku how-to, They Gave Us Life: Celebrating Mothers, Fathers & Others in Haiku. Cyndi is the former editor-in-chief of the 2012 ellipsis...literature & art. She earned her B.A., summa cum laude, in English from Westminster College and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Chi. She's been a long-time volunteer tutor with Literacy Action Center, working with adult learners, and a volunteer mentor for a DiverseCity Series writing group through Salt Lake Community College's Community Writing Center. Cyndi lives in Riverton, Utah with her husband and their dog and loves being in nature where she enjoys hiking and taking photographs.
